🍴 FORK IN THE ROAD
Two Scottsdale patios. Two restaurants with French influence. Two completely different ways to spend a beautiful fall evening outside.
This week’s Fork in the Road takes us from Kierland Commons to Old Town Scottsdale for a patio showdown between Zinc Bistro and The House Brasserie.
At Zinc, it is marble café tables, wicker chairs, oysters, French classics, and the kind of people-watching that makes Kierland feel a little more like Paris.
At The House, it is a historic Scottsdale home, mature trees, candlelight, and dinner beneath one of the oldest pine trees in the city.
Same idea?
Not really.
And that is what makes this one interesting.
This week’s question:
If you want dinner outside with a little French influence, where should you go?
Zinc Bistro offers a more authentic Parisian-bistro experience.
The House Brasserie offers a more romantic, hidden-garden experience.
Let’s break it down.

Zinc Bistro
🇫🇷 ZINC BISTRO
Zinc Bistro has been bringing a little bit of Paris to Kierland Commons for more than two decades.
Chef Matt Carter built the restaurant around classic French bistro traditions after studying French cuisine and spending time in France. Today, Zinc still describes itself as a 4,000-square-foot New York-style Parisian bistro. Zinc Bistro
The patio is a big part of its identity.
Out front, round marble tables and wicker café chairs spill toward the Kierland sidewalks. It is lively, visible, and built for people-watching.
But Zinc also has another side that many people walking through Kierland never see.
Tucked deeper inside is a secluded garden patio with a fountain, leafy landscaping, and candlelight at night. Zinc Bistro
So depending on where you sit, Zinc can feel like two different restaurants.
Front patio?
Parisian sidewalk café.
Back patio?
Quiet garden escape.

The House Brasserie
Then there is The House.
Hidden along Main Street in Old Town Scottsdale, this one feels nothing like Kierland.
The restaurant occupies a historic home built in 1939 by the Mowry family, and the exterior remains largely original. The House Brasserie
The patio is shaded by mature landscaping, including what the restaurant says is Scottsdale’s oldest pine tree, originally planted by the Mowry family as their Christmas tree in 1943. The House Brasserie
That history changes the entire experience.
You are not sitting outside a shopping center.
You are dining in what feels like someone’s old Scottsdale garden.
The restaurant describes the interior as Victorian-inspired, while the patio has more of an intimate, old-world feel with trees, greenery, and tucked-away tables. The House Brasserie
For romance, this one has a serious advantage.

House Brasserie
🍽️ THE FOOD
This is where the restaurants really separate.
Zinc Bistro
Zinc leans much more directly into French bistro cooking.
Chef Matt Carter’s menu is grounded in classic French traditions, and the restaurant also features a dedicated oyster bar with fresh shellfish, including oysters, clams, mussels, and lobster. Zinc Bistro
This is the place where the experience naturally calls for:
French onion soup.
Oysters.
Moules.
Steak frites.
A bottle of wine.
And something rich for dessert.
Zinc is not trying to reinvent the French bistro.
It is trying to make you forget for a little while that you are sitting in North Scottsdale.
The House Brasserie
The House goes in a different direction.
Its current menu is Modern American with French influence, not traditional French bistro cooking. The House Brasserie
Current dishes include:
Escargot de Bourgogne with garlic bone-marrow butter
Hamachi Crudo
Crab Cakes
Whipped Feta
Braised Short Rib
20-ounce Delmonico Ribeye
House Burger
and Crab Fried Rice. The House Brasserie
So while there are French touches, The House is much broader and more contemporary.
The food advantage:
Traditional French bistro experience → Zinc Bistro
Creative modern dinner with French influence → The House Brasserie

Zinc Bistro Bar

The House Brasserie Bar
🍸 THE BAR
Both restaurants take drinks seriously, but again, they feel completely different.
Zinc Bistro
At Zinc, wine feels like part of the meal.
You have that big zinc-topped bar, seafood, oysters, and a setting where Champagne or a bottle of French wine just makes sense.
The bar experience fits naturally with the bistro's overall identity.
The House Brasserie
The House is much more cocktail-driven.
Its current cocktail menu includes drinks such as:
Smoked Manhattan - $22
Coffee For The Win - $20
Pink Smoke - $20
Mezcal Sour - $22
Whistle Pig Old Fashioned - $20
and Pardon My French - $22. The House Brasserie
They also have a curated wine list, but cocktails are clearly part of the personality here.
The bar advantage:
Wine, oysters and French-bistro energy → Zinc
Craft cocktails and date-night drinks → The House

Zinc Bistro Patio Area

House Brasserie Patio Area
🌿 THE PATIO
This is why we're doing this comparison.
Zinc Bistro
Zinc gives you choices.
The sidewalk patio puts you right in the middle of Kierland Commons with the energy of people walking past, shopping, and dining.
Then there is the hidden garden patio farther inside.
That one is more romantic, quieter, and built around a fountain, greenery, and candlelight after dark. Zinc Bistro
If you want the closest thing Scottsdale has to sitting outside a Parisian café, Zinc's front patio wins this category easily.
The House Brasserie
The House patio is completely different.
There is no shopping-center energy.
No storefront parade.
No people-watching.
Instead, it is mature trees, an old Scottsdale home, soft lighting, and dinner beneath a pine tree planted more than 80 years ago. The House Brasserie
It feels secluded.
Private.
Romantic.
Almost like you found somebody’s secret backyard in the middle of Old Town.
Patio advantage:
People-watching + Parisian café atmosphere → Zinc Bistro
Romantic garden + historic Scottsdale atmosphere → The House Brasserie
✨ THE VIBE
Zinc Bistro
Lively.
Classic.
Stylish without trying too hard.
You can show up for brunch, lunch, oysters in the afternoon, or a full dinner.
Because Zinc is open throughout the day, it has a more true neighborhood-bistro rhythm.
The restaurant currently serves lunch daily, an afternoon menu, dinner, and weekend brunch. Zinc Bistro
The House Brasserie
The House feels more like an occasion.
It is dinner-focused.
It is quieter.
It is darker.
And the historic setting makes everything feel a little more special.
The current fall 2026 schedule listed prominently on the restaurant’s website is Tuesday through Saturday beginning at 5 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. The House Brasserie
One editorial note: another reservation page on The House website still shows Monday service, so their own site currently conflicts. I would publish the newer fall 2026 schedule above, but I would not make a big deal about Monday in the article without confirming directly with the restaurant. The House Brasserie
That is exactly the kind of thing I want us catching before readers do.
🤝 THE SERVICE
Both are built around full-service dining, but the experiences feel different.
At Zinc, service matches the classic bistro environment - polished, professional, and accustomed to everything from casual lunches to longer dinners.
The House puts even more emphasis on the evening's hospitality. Its positioning brings back an era when service and hospitality mattered most, which fits the restaurant's more intimate, special-occasion feel. The House Brasserie
For a casual patio lunch?
Zinc.
For an anniversary or slower date-night dinner?
The House.
💰 WHAT ABOUT THE PRICE?
Neither one is a budget restaurant.
But you can use them differently.
At Zinc, you can stop in for lunch, brunch, oysters, or an afternoon drink without committing to a full dinner.
That makes Zinc easier to visit casually.
The House is more of a dinner destination.
Current entrées include a $48 braised short rib, $82 Delmonico ribeye, and $24 House Burger, with cocktails mostly around $18-$22. The House Brasserie
So if you are planning The House, I would think of it as the more intentional night out.

🌹 CHOOSE THE HOUSE BRASSERIE IF...

✔️ A more intimate, special-occasion feel
🍴 FORKING SCOTTSDALE’S TAKE
This one really comes down to what kind of patio night you want.
If you want the closest thing to a real Parisian café experience in Scottsdale, Zinc Bistro wins.
The sidewalk tables, wicker chairs, marble tops, oysters, French food, and Kierland people-watching give it a stronger Parisian identity.
Zinc Bistro is one of the places we visit often just to sit outside on the front patio, relax, and people-watch while enjoying a nice glass of rosé and lunch.
But if the question is simply:
Which patio would we choose for a romantic dinner?
That gets harder.
The House Brasserie has something Zinc cannot reproduce.
History.
You are eating outside a Scottsdale home built in 1939, underneath mature trees, in a space that feels tucked away from everything happening around it.
So our Fork in the Road looks like this:
🥐 Parisian patio experience → Zinc Bistro
🌹 Romantic garden patio → The House Brasserie
And if somebody asked which one feels the most like Paris?
Zinc.
No hesitation.
But if they asked where we would book a quiet dinner for two on a cool Scottsdale night?
The House could easily win that one.
