Scottsdale's restaurant scene has a funny way of giving diners two very different choices in one night.

Do you want polished, fashionable, and a little Paris-meets-New York?

Or do you want Arizona-born food, a neighborhood feel, and a place that feels like it has been here much longer than it actually has?

That's the interesting fork we're looking at this week:

Society Swan vs. The Ponderosa House.

Both have been generating attention, both offer something different from the usual Scottsdale restaurant formula, and both are worth knowing about.

But if you only have one night?

Which fork are you taking?

Located inside Scottsdale Fashion Square, Society Swan was created by Scottsdale restaurateur Sam Fox and Fox Restaurant Concepts.

And from the moment you walk in, it's clear this isn't trying to be a neighborhood diner.

The two-level restaurant has a sophisticated brasserie feel with dark wood, rich fabrics, and classic artwork. PHOENIX magazine described it as an elegant American brasserie where seafood towers and sashimi can share the menu with fried chicken and Wagyu pigs in a blanket. (PHOENIX magazine)

In other words, Society Swan doesn't really want you to put it in one box.

It's French-inspired. It's American. There's sushi. There's steak. There's seafood.

And there's a serious cocktail program.

That combination is part of what makes it interesting.

The current menu has plenty to choose from, but a few dishes immediately jump out.

There's Steak Tartare à la Parisienne, Truffled Brie Baguette, French Onion Soup, oysters, and a Grand Seafood Tower.

Then things get even more eclectic with sushi rolls including Spicy Tuna Tataki, Torched Hamachi and Royal Rainbow.

For dinner, you can go classic with Filet Mignon, take the French-American route with Chicken Francese, or go indulgent with Lobster Carbonara and black truffle. (Society Swan)

And that's probably Society Swan's greatest strength:

There is something for almost everyone at the table.

One person wants steak. Someone else wants sushi. Another wants pasta.

And someone just wants a very good martini.

Nobody has to compromise.

If you're going to Society Swan primarily for drinks, you're not making a bad decision.

The restaurant calls its martinis "World Famous," with versions ranging from the classic Dirty to the Original Juicy, International Affair with sake and yuzu, and an Espresso Martini with burnt banana and salted cold foam.

Best for: Date night, cocktails, meeting friends, a stylish lunch or dinner, or when you want the restaurant itself to be part of the evening.

Now take the other fork.

Head into Old Town, and you'll find The Ponderosa House, located at 4121 N. Marshall Way in the former Frank & Lupe's space.

And this restaurant is almost the opposite of Society Swan.

Where Society Swan feels polished and fashion-forward, Ponderosa House aims to feel like a neighborhood restaurant.

And according to Phoenix New Times, that's exactly what makes it interesting.

The restaurant opened in May and was created by Jacob Finley, the longtime restaurateur behind Karsen's Grill. Finley took the former Frank & Lupe's location and transformed the property's original 1922 house into the restaurant's main dining room. (Phoenix New Times)

The result is a restaurant designed around three distinct experiences:

The House. The Cantina. The Patio.

That alone makes Ponderosa House a little different.

You're not simply walking into a dining room.

You get to decide what kind of night you're having.

The restaurant's culinary philosophy is called "Arizona Born Food."

The idea is simple: scratch-made food inspired by Arizona and Southwest flavors and ingredients, without turning the restaurant into another over-the-top Scottsdale production.

The current menu includes dishes like Ahi Tostadas, El Charro Elote, Chicken Chiricahua, Pastrami Señor, Green-Chile Pork Stew, Filet Mignon, and the restaurant's Ponderosa Burger.

One of the more interesting things about the menu is how it moves between Southwestern flavors and American comfort food.

You can have tacos. You can have green chile pork. You can have a burger.

You can have filet. And you can finish with something like Ella's Lemon Olive Oil Cake.

It's not trying to be overly precious.

It's trying to be good.

Ponderosa House also has a dedicated cantina, where the restaurant turns up the energy.

The concept is built around tacos, green chile, handcrafted margaritas and cocktails using Arizona botanicals and fresh citrus. The cantina also stays open later than the main kitchen, making it a natural stop for drinks after dinner.

And then there's Porch Hour, the restaurant's version of happy hour.

It's offered Tuesday through Friday from 3–6 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 2–5 PM, with food and cocktails designed for the patio.

Best for: A casual dinner, drinks with friends, patio dining, a more neighborhood-style experience or anyone who wants to see a different side of Old Town.

Here's where it gets interesting.

Choose Society Swan if you want a restaurant that's polished, energetic and designed for a night out.

It's the better choice when your group can't agree on what they want to eat because the menu covers so much territory.

Steak? Check.

Sushi? Check.

Seafood? Check.

Pasta? Check.

Martinis? Absolutely.

And its location at Scottsdale Fashion Square puts it squarely in the middle of Scottsdale's newer luxury dining scene. PHOENIX magazine called it a winning Scottsdale brasserie and praised dishes including the fig tartlet, chicken Francese and praline butter crunch cake.

Choose The Ponderosa House if you want something that feels more connected to Scottsdale and Arizona.

It's less about being flashy and more about creating a place where people can become regulars.

That's something Phoenix New Times specifically picked up on, describing Ponderosa House as the kind of neighborhood restaurant Old Town has been missing — a place that doesn't feel like a club, doesn't require shouting across the table, and doesn't seem designed exclusively for tourists.

And honestly?

That's a pretty good compliment in Scottsdale.

That's the fun part.

Society Swan and The Ponderosa House aren't really competing for exactly the same customer.

They're two different answers to the same question:

Where should we eat tonight?

If you're dressing up, meeting friends, celebrating something or looking for a polished night of cocktails and dinner, Society Swan makes a strong case.

If you want a relaxed Scottsdale evening, Southwestern flavors, a margarita and a place that feels a little more like a local hangout, The Ponderosa House may be your better bet.

And that's exactly what we like about a good Fork in the Road.

There doesn't always have to be one winner.

Sometimes it simply comes down to what kind of night you're looking for.
