SKY-HIGH PANORAMAS VS. DRAMATIC SUNSET PATIOS
Some Scottsdale-area restaurants have a nice view.
These two built an entire dinner around it.
This week’s Fork in the Road puts Orange Sky at Talking Stick Resort against J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician for one of our favorite categories yet:
The Ultimate Sunset Dinner.
Orange Sky takes you 15 floors above the desert with sweeping panoramic views in nearly every direction.
J&G does something completely different, sitting high on the slopes of Camelback Mountain with a beautiful outdoor terrace looking across The Phoenician and the Valley below.
One puts you above almost everything.
The other puts you right against the mountain.
And when the Arizona sky starts turning orange, pink, and purple?
That is when this comparison gets interesting.
Quick geography note before we get into it: Talking Stick Resort uses a Scottsdale mailing address but sits on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, just outside Scottsdale's municipal boundary. The view is close enough that we're making the short detour.
🍴 FORK IN THE ROAD
This week’s question:
Where would you book dinner if the sunset matters almost as much as what is on the plate?
Orange Sky gives you the bigger, higher, panoramic wow factor.
J&G Steakhouse offers a more intimate Camelback Mountain resort setting.
Both can deliver a serious steak dinner.
Both have strong wine and cocktail programs.
But the evening feels completely different.

Orange Sky
Orange Sky has no subtle entrance.
You are going up.
Way up.
The signature restaurant at Talking Stick Resort sits on the 15th floor, with floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic views that stretch across the Valley. Orange Sky offers 360-degree views, while its separate lounge emphasizes mountain views, wine, and live entertainment. Talking Stick Resort
That height is Orange Sky's superpower.
As sunset approaches, you are not looking through landscaping or across another building.
You are looking across Scottsdale, the mountains, and the Sonoran Desert from above.
The trip up the elevator feels like part of the dinner.

J&G
J&G does not try to compete by going higher than Orange Sky.
It doesn't need to.
The restaurant sits on the top floor of The Phoenician, nestled at the base of Camelback Mountain, with a scenic outdoor patio designed specifically around sunset dining. Marriott
Instead of the expansive tower view at Orange Sky, J&G gives you something more layered.
Camelback Mountain behind you.
The manicured resort below.
Palm trees and desert landscaping.
Then the Valley stretching into the distance.
The Phoenician actually calls its outdoor space a scenic sunset patio, which tells you exactly how important the view is to the restaurant's identity. The Phoenician
This is less:
"Look how high we are."
And more:
"Look where we are."
🌇 THE VIEW
Let's start with the obvious category.

Orange Sky
Orange Sky
Orange Sky wins on sheer scale.
You are 15 floors up.
The windows wrap around the restaurant.
The view changes depending on where you sit.
And the elevation gives you that feeling of watching the entire Valley change colors at once.
If someone visiting Arizona told us:
"I want one dinner where I can really see the desert sunset."
Orange Sky would absolutely be on the shortlist.

J&G
J&G
J&G wins on intimacy.
The patio is outdoors, so there is no glass between you and the evening.
You sit on the mountainside with the resort and city below, firelight around the terrace, and Camelback Mountain as part of the setting.
The view isn't as geographically expansive.
But it may be more romantic.
View advantage:
Biggest panorama → Orange Sky
Most romantic outdoor setting → J&G Steakhouse
🥩 THE FOOD
Both restaurants live comfortably in upscale steak-and-seafood territory, but they approach it differently.

Orange Sky
Chef de Cuisine Martin Yepez leads Orange Sky's kitchen with what the restaurant describes as a modern expression of steakhouse cooking influenced by Sonoran Desert ingredients and food sovereignty. Talking Stick Resort
The current menu includes dishes such as:
Chilean Sea Bass - $54
Ora King Salmon - $42
Double-Bone Iberico Pork Chop - $60
Two Wash Ranch Chicken - $40
Shrimp Pasta with Green Garbanzos - $38
and an enormous Orange Sky Coastal Market - $220, loaded with lobster tail, shrimp, crab claws, scallops, oysters, and hamachi. OpenTable
The restaurant also leans heavily into premium steaks.
This feels like a resort steakhouse with a distinctly Arizona point of view.

J&G Steakhouse
J&G is the more traditional of the two steakhouses.
Executive Chef Jacques Qualin, who has led the restaurant since it opened in 2008, oversees a menu built around prime meats, seafood, and recognizable steakhouse sides. The Phoenician
Current selections include:
Wagyu Hanger Steak Frites - $55
Six Peppercorn Prime New York Steak - from $60
Grass-Fed Boneless Ribeye - $70
Bone-In Filet Mignon - $82
Prime Bone-In Rib Eye - $89
Maine Lobster - $75
and a 30-ounce Wagyu Tomahawk for two - $197. OpenTable
Then come the sides:
Lobster shells and cheese.
Potato gratin with Comté.
Creamed spinach.
Roasted mushrooms.
That is classic steakhouse territory.
Food advantage:
Arizona/Sonoran personality → Orange Sky
Classic luxury steakhouse → J&G
🍸 THE BAR
A sunset restaurant needs a serious drink program.
Thankfully, neither one treats cocktails as an afterthought.

Orange Sky Bar
Orange Sky
Orange Sky's biggest strength may actually be wine.
Its list includes 300-plus bottles and more than 30 wines by the glass, and the restaurant has received Wine Spectator recognition every year since 2011, including its higher-tier Best of Award of Excellence from 2016 through 2025.
Current wines by the glass range from Arizona producers such as Page Springs and Merkin Vineyards to Caymus, Flowers, and Far Niente-related selections.
The cocktail menu includes drinks such as the Blood Orange Sky Martini, The After Smoke, and Dazed & Infused.
On Friday and Saturday nights, the adjacent Orange Sky Lounge features live entertainment. Talking Stick Resort

J&G Bar
J&G
J&G positions cocktails as part of its lounge and dinner experience, alongside its steak and seafood program. The Phoenician
Here, though, I think wine naturally becomes part of the steakhouse ritual.
Cocktail before dinner.
Bottle of red with the steak.
Maybe something after sunset.
Bar advantage:
Wine depth + live weekend lounge → Orange Sky
Classic steakhouse cocktail/wine night → J&G
🔥 THE PATIO

J&G Patio
This is where J&G fights back.
Orange Sky's main draw is the panoramic indoor view through its floor-to-ceiling windows.
J&G gives you a true under-the-stars patio.
The Phoenician specifically promotes dinner on its scenic sunset terrace, and the outdoor setting makes the resort landscape part of the meal rather than something you're simply observing from above. The Phoenician
When Scottsdale weather hits that perfect October-to-April window?
That matters.
Patio advantage:
J&G Steakhouse
Pretty clearly.
✨ THE VIBE
Orange Sky
Orange Sky feels like a destination.
The elevator ride.
The 15th floor.
The windows.
The sunset.
The wine.
It is the kind of restaurant where you might spend the first five minutes after sitting down looking out instead of looking at the menu.
The room also feels slightly more dramatic because the panorama surrounds you.
J&G
J&G feels more timeless.
The Phoenician itself already sets a tone before you even reach the restaurant.
Once upstairs, the environment is refined and understated rather than showy.
And outside?
Firelight, desert air, and Camelback Mountain do most of the decorating.
Vibe advantage:
Dramatic wow factor → Orange Sky
Quiet luxury → J&G
🤝 THE SERVICE
Both operate at a level where polished resort service is part of what you're paying for.
Orange Sky is Talking Stick Resort's signature fine-dining restaurant.
J&G is The Phoenician's flagship steakhouse.
Neither should feel rushed.
But the experience is slightly different.
Orange Sky feels more like a destination dinner built around the view.
J&G feels more like a luxury steakhouse dinner with an extraordinary view.
That distinction sounds small.
It isn't.
💰 WHAT ABOUT THE PRICE?
Neither one belongs in Dining Deals.
This is a splurge matchup.
At J&G, steaks currently run from roughly the mid-$50s into the $80s and beyond, before sides, cocktails, or wine enter the picture. OpenTable
Orange Sky's seafood and substantial entrées generally run $38-$60 before moving into premium steak and raw-bar territory. OpenTable
So the practical difference is not necessarily:
Which one is cheap?
Neither.
The better question is:
What experience are you willing to pay for?
At Orange Sky, you're paying partly for altitude and panorama.
At J&G, you're paying partly for The Phoenician and that resort-level steakhouse experience.
☀️ THE SUNSET STRATEGY
This deserves its own category because timing matters more here than at almost any restaurant we've compared.
Orange Sky
Book early enough to be seated before sunset.
You want to watch the colors change, not arrive when the show is almost over.
Because the restaurant offers views in multiple directions, your table location matters.
If sunset is why you're going, mention that when making the reservation.
J&G
Same advice.
Patio.
Before sunset.
And request it.
The difference is that Scottsdale weather can decide whether you actually want to be outdoors.
On a perfect October evening?
J&G's patio becomes very hard to beat.

🔥 CHOOSE J&G STEAKHOUSE IF...

🍴 FORKING SCOTTSDALE'S TAKE
This one depends almost entirely on what you mean when you say:
"I want dinner with a view."
If you mean:
I want to look out and see everything.
Go to Orange Sky.
Fifteen floors up, panoramic windows and a Valley-wide sunset make it the more dramatic visual experience.
Few places in Arizona feel quite like watching the desert turn orange from that height.
But if what you really mean is:
I want to sit outside somewhere beautiful as the sun goes down.
Then we would choose J&G Steakhouse.
You lose some of the altitude.
You gain Camelback Mountain, the grounds of The Phoenician, desert air, and a true outdoor patio experience.
So our Fork in the Road looks like this:
🌇 Biggest sunset panorama → Orange Sky
🔥 Best sunset patio → J&G Steakhouse
🍷 Wine destination → Orange Sky
🥩 Classic steakhouse → J&G
🎶 After-dinner lounge energy → Orange Sky
❤️ Romantic resort dinner → J&G
And if the category is:
THE ULTIMATE SUNSET DINNER
This might be one of the closest Fork in the Roads we've done.
But on a perfect Scottsdale fall evening?
J&G Steakhouse gets the fork.
Not because the view is bigger.
It isn't.
Because sitting outside on that elevated terrace as the sun goes down over the Valley gives you something a window, even a spectacular 15th-floor window, can't fully reproduce.
But if we had out-of-town guests and wanted the biggest possible "Wow, look at Arizona" moment?
We'd take them straight up to Orange Sky.
