🍴 FORK IN THE ROAD
Two new Scottsdale Mexican destinations. Two completely different approaches. Which fork are you taking?
Scottsdale has never been short on Mexican restaurants, but every once in a while two new arrivals come along that make you stop and take a closer look.
That's what makes this week's Fork in the Road interesting.
Miel de Agave Scottsdale and Hecho Libre are both relatively new additions to the Scottsdale dining scene; both sit along Scottsdale Road, and both are taking Mexican cuisine in an upscale direction.
But that's where the similarities start to fade.
Miel de Agave is bold, energetic, and steak-forward, with the kind of atmosphere designed for a big night out, cocktails, and a little bit of Scottsdale nightlife.
Hecho Libre takes a more chef-driven approach, bringing together the coastal flavors of Baja with the ingredients and traditions of the Sonoran Desert under chef Wes Avila.
One is about energy, indulgence, and the scene.
The other is about ingredients, place and culinary storytelling.
So if you had one night and had to choose...
Which fork are you taking?
🥩 THE LEFT FORK: MIEL DE AGAVE
Big steaks. Bold flavors. Big Scottsdale energy.
Located at The Shops at Hilton Village, Miel de Agave brings a lively interpretation of Mexican cuisine to Scottsdale.
The restaurant describes itself as a dynamic Mexican restaurant combining contemporary cooking, bold flavors, and an energetic atmosphere. Its Scottsdale location also features live music and a menu that stretches from Mexican classics and street-food-inspired dishes to premium steaks. (Miel de Agave)
And if you're looking for a steakhouse experience with a Mexican accent, this is where Miel de Agave really separates itself.
The menu includes premium cuts alongside dishes that bring Mexican flavors into unexpected territory.
A few examples:
🥩 MDA Tomahawk
🌶️ Ribeye Aguachile — $26
🍤 Shrimp Aguachile — $22
🌽 Mexico Rib Style Elote — $15
🥑 MDA Guacamole — $18
The Ribeye Aguachile might be the perfect example of what Miel de Agave is trying to accomplish: Black Angus ribeye paired with salsa negra, chiltepin sauce, onions, cilantro, microgreens, radish, and avocado.
It's not trying to be your neighborhood taco shop.
Miel de Agave is leaning into luxury cuts, cocktails, presentation, and atmosphere.
And the beverage program plays a major role in that experience. The restaurant's Scottsdale location promotes live music and a stylish setting alongside its Mexican food and cocktails. (Miel de Agave)
THE MIEL DE AGAVE EXPERIENCE
This is the restaurant I'd choose when the evening is about more than just dinner.
✔ You're going out.
✔ You're ordering a steak.
✔ You're having a couple of cocktails.
✔ Maybe there's music playing.
✔ Maybe you're celebrating something.
✔ Maybe you simply want dinner to turn into a night out.
Miel de Agave is built for that.
🌵 THE RIGHT FORK: HECHO LIBRE
Baja meets the Sonoran Desert.
Just a little farther north on Scottsdale Road, Hecho Libre is taking a very different approach.
Located inside the Kimpton Miralina Resort and Villas, Hecho Libre is the first Arizona concept from chef Wes Avila, a two-time James Beard Award finalist whose cooking is rooted in contemporary Mexican cuisine.
The restaurant's culinary identity is built around a meeting of two landscapes:
Baja's coastal brightness + the Sonoran Desert.
That philosophy shows up throughout the menu.
Think:
🌊 Fresh aguachiles
🔥 Flame-kissed meats and seafood
🌮 Elevated tacos
🫓 House-pressed tortillas
🍹 Agave-forward cocktails
🍷 Mexican wines
But the real difference is the ingredient-driven philosophy behind the food.
Chef Avila's menu is designed around the ingredients and agricultural traditions of the region, including partnerships with local desert producers. The restaurant describes the cuisine as expressive, vibrant and distinctly Sonoran. (Kimpton Miralina Resort)
And then there's the setting.
Hecho Libre is surrounded by the design of Miralina, with warm terracotta tones, natural textures and an expansive patio that gives the restaurant a distinctly desert-resort feel.
It feels polished without feeling overly formal.
It's sophisticated without screaming for attention.
And that's probably the best way to describe the restaurant itself.
THE HECHO LIBRE EXPERIENCE
Hecho Libre feels like the place you'd choose for a long dinner where you actually want to sit and enjoy the experience.
✔ Order several things.
✔ Share them.
✔ Try something you've never had before.
✔ Have a cocktail.
✔ Stay awhile.
The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, making it a much broader all-day destination than a typical upscale Mexican restaurant.

🍴 THE FORKING SCOTTSDALE TAKE
Here's where this Fork in the Road gets interesting.
I don't think these restaurants are actually competing for exactly the same customer.
Miel de Agave is about the night.
It's the place you go when you want your dinner to have some energy behind it. Steak, cocktails, music, atmosphere, and a little bit of spectacle.
Hecho Libre is more about the food and the setting.
It's the place you go when you're interested in what the chef is doing, want to explore Baja and Sonoran flavors, and are looking for a more relaxed evening.
So our choice really depends on what you're hungry for.
🥩 TAKE THE LEFT FORK
Choose Miel de Agave when you want:
Steak + cocktails + energy + nightlife
It's the more obvious choice for a celebration, group dinner or night when you want the restaurant itself to be part of the entertainment.
🌵 TAKE THE RIGHT FORK
Choose Hecho Libre when you want:
Chef-driven Mexican + Baja flavors + Sonoran ingredients + relaxed atmosphere
It's the better fit when the food itself is the reason you're going.
🛣️ SO... WHICH FORK ARE YOU TAKING?
That's the whole point of Fork in the Road.
We're not going to tell you that one restaurant is automatically "better."
They're different experiences.
Miel de Agave is bringing the energy.
Hecho Libre is bringing the culinary point of view.
Both are worth having on your Scottsdale dining radar.
But if you could only choose one tonight...
